About Aromatherapy
An aromatherapy massage can be a luxurious relaxing experience, and if desired it can be tailored to also clinically treat many conditions.
What are essential oils?
Essential oils are concentrations of the scent producing chemicals found in plants. Many are believed to possess a wide range of therapeutic properties, and can be used in aromatherapy treatments.
What is aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is a holistic therapy that uses nature’s fragrances concentrated (essential oils) for therapeutic purposes through a variety of methods of application. Aromatherapists principally use them combined with massage, diluted with a carrier oil. They can also be vaporised, a few drops can put in a bath (some types of oil only), and they can be used in poultices, creams etc.
Where do essential oils come from?
Essential oils can be extracted from many types of plant matter including flowers, leaves, twigs, tree bark and wood, resin from trees, fruit peel and plant roots.
How are essential oils able to affect us through aromatherapy?
When used in massage, small amounts of essential oils are mixed into a much larger amount of massage oil (e.g. sweet almond or grapeseed oil), and applied to the skin with a variety of relaxing, soothing and therapeutic massage techniques. The molecules of the essential oils are so small that they can pass through the skin and into the blood stream, then on to affect the body systems in many ways.
A second and very important way in which essential oils can affect us is through our sense of smell (olfaction). Scent molecules enter the nose and connect with nerve endings that send messages to the brain. These are interpreted and trigger the release of a variety of mood affecting chemicals from the brain.
What are the therapeutic properties of essential oils?
Essential oils have a variety of properties that can affect us both physically and emotionally. They can relieve the symptoms of colds, lower blood pressure, soothe the stomach, regulate the menstrual cycle, detoxify the system, smooth and help ageing skin, relieve inflammation and pain, relieve asthma. Some of the emotional benefits of essential oils are that they can be uplifting, sedative, stimulating, de-stressing or anti-depressant. Each type of essential oil has its own specific properties, so aromatherapists can blend different oils to cater for the individual needs of the client in their aromatherapy treatment.
