About Reflexology
Reflexology is based on the concept that all areas of our body are linked to specific areas or reflex-points particularly on our feet, and also on our hands. By stimulating the reflex-points the reflexologist can work to treat areas of disease, discomfort and imbalance throughout the client's body.
The history and basis for reflexology
Ancient paintings have been found that suggest reflexology type treatments were practised by the Egyptians 4000 years ago. It is also documented that in 4th century B.C China, Dr Wang-Wei used the benefits of acupuncture with needles and the application of pressure to the soles of the feet using the thumbs in order to treat his patients. He believed that the therapeutic effects noted were due to the release of healing energy through the patient’s body.
Reflexology today
Reflexology as we know it today was founded by Eunice Ingham, a physiotherapist who through investigation and experimentation produced maps of the feet that showed the areas and organs of the body where there appear to be links for treatment purposes. The benefits of reflexology that Ingham particularly noticed were the speeding-up of the body’s healing processes after surgery, and a decrease in the perception of pain. In 1930s America she set-up a private reflexology practice where due to the success of her treatments, individuals would travel from all over the country.

What are the therapeutic benefits of reflexology?
An important factor in the success of reflexology treatment lies in its ability to reduce or control stress. It has been shown that prolonged exposure to stress can depress the body’s immune system which it is believed could even contribute to the developement of cancer is some individuals.
Your reflexology practitioner offers one of a number of gentle non-invasive therapies that are gaining acceptance as being effective and relevant to modern day life. Reflexology can be used to help most conditions whether its effects are through the traditional idea of its restoring healthy energy flows, the stimulation of nerves, or through its very effective de-stressing qualities.
About reflexology treatment
A reflexology treatment typically lasts around an hour. The time between reflexology treatments varies according to the nature and severity of any conditions being treated, but is usually somewhere between weekly and monthly. Often the frequency of treatment is reduced as the client makes progress. The reflexologist will advise regarding this, and suggest an appropriate treatment programme.
It is important to state that illness is not a pre-requisite to having reflexology treatments, they can be relaxing and enjoyable, and many clients have reflexology perhaps monthly to help maintain a state of general wellbeing.
